Introduction: This is a lesson in painting in one color. This allows the student
to focus on the artistic element of values without the complications of color
theory. Picasso's "Blue Period" paintings are good examples of this style of painting.
Materials:
Pencil
White acrylic
paint
A dark color
of acrylic paint (for example ultramarine blue)
Disposable
palette sheet, glass or Plexiglas to mix on
Synthetic
acrylic brushes (rounds and flats)
Canvas paper,
canvas board, watercolor paper or canvas
Water and
water container
Directions:
Begin by sketching your subject on the
painting surface with pencil.
Create different shades of one color by mixing in varying amounts of white
to the color. Remember to keep some of the darkest tone, without white added,
for shadows.
Use the lightest tones for areas that have the most light and darkest tone
for the shadows. You are painting the values of the objects.
Don't be concerned about which colors to use together, just which shades of
one color that you want to use to represent shapes in a painting.
