Spooky Halloween Bats

By Jenny Mead

Introduction:
Using polymer clay and wire form, we'll make a Halloween Bat that will make your mom and dad's skin creep!

Materials:

  • 1 package of black Polyform clay per child
  • Wire form pieces cut into triangles 3'' tall (2 per bat)
  • Rolling pins (markers will work)
  • Plexiglas plates (1 per child)
  • Clayshapers, modeling tools, toothpicks, etc.

Directions:

  1. Warm the black Polyform in your hands for a few minutes until it is pliable enough to easily work.

  2. Split the clay into 2 pieces, one a bit larger than the other. The bigger piece will be the body of the bat and the smaller piece will be the head. Pinch out 2 feet for your bat on the larger piece and pinch a nose and ears on the smaller piece. Make sure each of the pinched parts is still attached securely to the main parts of the bat or else they will fall off after they are baked. Put the head onto the body and work them together until they are one piece.

  3. Mold the Wireform triangles into wings and stick them into the clay. Make sure that they are firmly rooted in the clay (pinch around the edges) so they don't fall out later.

  4. Cook the bat according to the directions for cooking Polyform clay (about 18 minutes at 220 degrees). When the bat has cooled sufficiently paint the wings (and any other details you want) with acrylic paints. Let it dry sufficiently before you play with it.

Important Note:
Make sure that you wash your hands after this project because the Polyform clay does contain some mildly toxic chemicals. If you cook Polyform at home, it can be done in a conventional oven but will build up toxic fumes/residues after heavy cooking so thorough cleaning is recommended.
