Pressure Printing Lesson Plan

MATERIALS

  • Adhesive backed paper: 8.5”x11”
  • Label Paper Printing Plate: Construction Paper not too thick
  • Printing ink: Akua Intaglio Ink - soy based/waterbased ink
  • Brayer: Speedball 4” brayer (soft)
  • Inking plate: Speedball bench hook Palette paper
  • Print Paper: Canson Edition Bright White
  • Scissors or Xacto (depending on age of student)
  • Designs for print: the simpler the better (to begin with)
  • Make at least 3 copies of a design 1) First layer is of entire shape 2) Second layer is smaller shapes 3) Third layer adds more detail
  • Cleaning supplies: Baby wipes (before and after)
  • Soap and water

PREPARATION

  1. Cut paper to size for plate: 8”x10”
  2. Cut print paper to size for prints: 9”x12”
  3. Adhere plate to a sheet of clear polyester film (for easy clean up)

PROCESS

  1. Take design from public domain images or come up with own design and copy onto adhesive backed paper - If using an additive process for more detail/depth copy 2 or more sheets to add detail relief
  2. Peel base shape or shapes and arrange on plate
  3. When satisfied with composition adhere to plate
  4. Add details on top of base shape - top layer prints darkest and the print will be a mirror image of your plate
  5. Scoop out ink with palette knife onto inking plate/palette paper. The line of ink should be about the same length as the brayer. Roll out ink evenly – should make a tacky/zippy sound with an orange peel texture
  6. Plate has been adhered to a sheet of clear polyester film (for easy clean up). Registration marks have been drawn on the back side of the film (for printing). Apply a couple of even coats
  7. Clean edges where ink is on film with baby wipe - otherwise your margins will have ink
  8. Make sure hands and working surface are clean!
  9. Take print paper and gently set on top of inked plate – use the registration marks for placement
  10. Rub evenly in a circular motion with barren or burnisher over the entire piece. Hold paper firmly down near center of the piece – will prevent paper from slipping
  11. Hold one side of paper down while lifting an edge to check density of ink. May burnish again to make image darker
  12. Gently lift away from plate from one end of paper
  13. Hang to dry – can use newsprint to blot ink - helps in drying process with Akua inks
  14. Don’t forget to sign your artwork!
